Gravity ("auto" in previous program versions) is a type of takeup that actively moves the takeup pulley to maintain the desired belt tension.

The automatic takeup method where the takeup pulley is mounted on a horizontal trolley arrangement to a wire rope guided by a series of sheaves to a vertically suspended mass. The tension in the belt is generated by gravity..

TU-Drawing-HorizontalGravity

Pros

Gravity is free, available all the time and is fast. Can take advantage of mechanical sheaves to decrease weight travel distance (vertical height) or increase tension therefor can be used on any conveyor length. Can utilize capstan type rope brakes to lock the carriage on stopping if required.

Cons

Gravity always requires height to operate, which may necessitate high structural tower. Extra rope and sheaves mean higher maintenance operational inefficiencies.
