The angle between the axis of normal stress and the tangent to the Mohr envelope at a point representing a given failure-stress condition for solid material.
It is strongly recommended that this material property be quantified by testing (ASTM D6128-00, or latest) as errors can be introduced by assuming a value. For preliminary analysis, the program will "guess" a value based on the material's angle of repose. This assumption can be modified on the Default Value screen.
This value determines the coefficient of internal friction for calculating the portion of the material's vertical load contributing to shearing resistance.
