All inputs required to locate and define a backstop are added/edited in Belt Analyst™.

The backstop folder in Dynamic Analyst™ only provides information to the user on if or where backstops are located and what the maximum backstop torque limits are.

If no values are present, no backstop will be used and the pulley will be allowed to run backward.

If a Backstop torque and a brake torque are both defined for the same pulley, the total torque will be used as the backstop limit.

If during a simulation, the actual torque required to prevent negative speed is greater than the backstop torque limit, the belt will be allowed to run backward or in other words, the backstop mechanism will be slipping. It is the engineer’s responsibility to insure the mechanism selected is capable of handling this slip without failing. The user should always look at the belt velocity plot to ensure negative velocities do not exist if they are not planned.

Slipping backstops, either clutches or brakes, are often used when multiple backstops are located on more than one pulley to allow slip on the higher tension backstop location in order to facilitate load sharing between the multiple pulleys.
